Only women are allowed to live in Umoja. I visited the Kenyan village that began as a refuge for survivors of sexual violence, and discover its inhabitants thriving in the single-sex community
Still reeling and seething from that Clementine Ford comment. What an utter fuckwit. Hopefully, observations like that are a thing of the past and merely serve to embarrass those making them.
Villages like these are needed across the world; it doesn't look like male violence is ever going to end, and men pretending to be women only emphasises the problem.
Very much agree Rebecca, most especially with the first half of your first sentence. In that regard, can't we do a bit more than just say things - could not a special bank account be set up perhaps by some British rape crisis center into which each of us who want to, could pay some small amount of money each month, to perhaps help more such villages to be set up, and thrive? Or do we merely intone ' Learn to see and not to gape,/ and not to sit and talk all day/the world was nearly won by such an ape' (Brecht on opposition to Hitler)
Imagine a rapist deciding he was a woman and feigned abuse to enter the village to rape the rape survivors. In America they allowed a rapist to claim "womanhood" and placed him, uh uh her, into a women's prison to continue "her" raping spree. Steven King couldn't make this insanity up.
And the niteit Ford says they "must" allow biological men into the village. The arrogance of demand is appalling.
Wow . Just wow . Thank you for sharing and educating me . I love all women who lift other women up , especially those in desperate need . Shame on all the soldiers .. they should be identified , castrated and made bankrupt! 🤬
I can only join the chorus here. Clementine Ford is a disgrace to feminism. It speaks volumes, that instead of aiding the cause of Umojas women, she thought of critiquing the piece for transphobia.
I don't know how Clementine Ford has managed to hang on to any subscribers or other supporters. All she does is berate them for not supporting Palestine and female impersonators.
How sad these women still believe "without children we are nothing".
So sad that these women have to isolate themselves to be able to live without being tormented and abused in their natal society. I've read of a number of cases like this; of women separating themselves from their cultures in order to survive. In some cases where women have been accused of witchcraft and marked for death they escaped to set up small villages. Unfortunately, men have insinuated themselves into some of the groups of women and have takenover to set themselves up as headmen, demanding that the women work for them and provide them with sex. Whole cultures have been taught that the only worth of women is producing babies and serving a man. It reminds me of the opinions of George Jackson - even in the USA. This will only change with universal education and women receiving a fair compensation for ALL their work; even foundational work in the home.
George Jackson quote from his "Letters":
Women like to be dominated, love being strong-armed, need an overseer to supplement their weakness. So how could she really understand my feelings on self-determination. For this reason we should never allow women to express any opinions on the subject, but just to sit, listen to us, and attempt to understand. It is for them to obey and aid us, not to attempt to think. Women and children enjoy and need a strong hand poised above them.
In the society of our fathers and in the civilized world today, women feel it their obligation to be ever yielding and obedient to their men. Life is purposely made simple for them because of their nature, and they are happy. When the women outnumber the men in the black societies, the men take as many wives as they can afford, and care for them all equally. In the white for some nebulous reason the men can take only one . . . the rest are left to become prostitutes, nuns, or lesbians. In the civilized societies the women do light work, bear children, and lend purpose to the man's existence. Their job is to train the children in their early life to be men or women. Is this not enough? The rest is left to the men: government administration, the providing of means of subsistence, and defense, or maintenance of life and property against any who would deprive us of it, as the barbarian has and is still attempting to do. Women and children enjoy and need a strong hand poised above them.
All societies need places where people can seek asylum (in its kindest sense) - especially if those people are women. Refuges are an absolute necessity, and this is a(mother) tale of women doing great things for themselves with generosity and hope. I rather like the reversal of the traditional sex roles, with the women using men for their own purposes!
Clementine Ford is an utter dick and, here in Australia, we’ve had to put up with her under-graduate ideas for years. She’s gone quiet of late, thankfully.

Thank you Julie with my whole heart.

Clementine Ford is abusive and irrational in all sorts of manners. She should not be given the grace of a mention

I really hope these women have the best form of revenge and it seems they are doing so. They are happy and successful. Long may it continue.

Do I misread George Jackson or do other people also think that his remarks are sexist ignoramusness? Ian Mordant
Thanks for an illuminating article. I love your writing and learn so much from your posts.

Great to see that photo with Condoleeza Rice and Madeleine Albright. Two exemplary individuals heh!
