Stephen Fry and his pals aren’t going to admit being cowards Julie. They will just mingle with the crowd on this one, it’s what cowards do.
We will remember, as they continue to be lauded by the rather revolting BBC - always on the wrong side of any sexual or woman-hating phenomenon - and most people will not know and will not care.
But we will know, and the Stephen Fry’s of this world will know we know, and actually they will care, but they will not tell us they do.
Be satisfied that actually, your name is on the roll call of honour while many brave women will never be remembered for their resistance.
Fully with you on this Julie. However, I’d hesitate to say that the struggle is all but over. Stephen Fry is the kind of public figure who will condemn breast binding in one breath and celebrate a man tucking his balls as “art” in the next.
In our family yesterday we had a conversation triggered by the inclusion of a drag queen in the lineup for the Strictly Christmas special. I made a remark about the BBC grooming the public. My co-terf daughter said she thought that this was a non-misogynistic representation of drag, that it had nothing to do with trans. My son-in-law expressed his deep fear that the far right are hijacking the ideas of old school feminists like me as the vanguard of anti woke rhetoric. (I detected an undertone of “you need to be careful you’re not stoking the flames of fascism”.) I said if that’s happening, the BBC and the government are asleep on the job and it was up to people like me to call out instances of gender ideology especially when it’s under the guise of “family entertainment”. What swung it for me was the perfect 40 awarded by the judges for a pretty sloppy cha cha. The female impersonator’s partner was referring to him as “her” throughout, although it was obvious from footage of rehearsal that he was dancing with a bloke.
Yes. He made a mistake and is coming around. Better to welcome the change of mind. Attacking him for coming to agree with us will get us nowhere in encouraging the next person to do the same.
Why do you need to trust him? He might be sincere. See what he does. Again, we want to encourage others to be willing to change their minds. Saying what you've said accomplishes nothing in turning others around.
Fry is a 2-faced, entitled prick. I don't give a shit what he does or says. Most faggots are in love with their mirrors. And, faggots don't give a shit about women.
Fry needs to ask his "transgender friends" what they did to their wives behind closed doors before she organized her departure from a kink-obsessed husband. Here's the documentary he should be watching, along with 154k others. Vaishnavi Sundar, the creator of Behind the Looking Glass, is my hero of 2024. She's also started posting the individual interviews at Lime Soda Films youtube channel. Perhaps Fry would recognize some of his friends by our descriptions.
Fry deserves to be reprimanded by you, and I like the idea of "encouraging others to just be honest about how captured they were, and admit that they chose the coward’s way, rather than standing up for those harmed by gender ideology." But very few people will admit they were cowards. And pissed off as we righteously are, we must welcome the sea change and make space for forgiveness and grace, when deserved. I don't need self-flagellation; I never need that. People were scared for a very good reason, as so many of us in the arts know too well. Don't be weaselly like Fry. Simply admit you were wrong. Admit you were scared. Apologize sincerely. Express sincerely that you admire those who did stand up. We need to make admitting to mistakes a cool thing.
I’m with you Julie. If everyone had spoken out years ago, we wouldn’t be where we are. Fry is a disgrace. A modicum of research, which we all had to do, would have alerted him to the truth of what’s been happening. I’m glad more people are waking up but they shouldn’t expect any plaudits for speaking out now.
“…let's encourage others to just be honest about how captured they were, and admit that they chose the coward’s way…”
While I have always been on the right side of history, I don’t agree that all people on the wrong side were cowards. Sure, there was/is a proportion who don’t have the courage to support what they believe, but there are also many who believed what they were being fed. They weren’t cowards, just frustratingly ignorant and very slow to finally understand that they were being fed bullshit. I applaud anyone who changes their mind and admits that they had the wool pulled over their eyes. I don’t see them as cowards for being ignorant.
“Those wishing to be seen to be ‘on the right side of history’ have targeted and vilified those of us who have stood against gender ideology because it harms children, women, and lesbians and gay men.”
I think it must be difficult for someone like Fry, a funny and charming intellectual who has enjoyed a stellar career in multiple domains and is loved by many. For most of his life he has been able to proclaim the side of the angels, the virtuous underdogs. Now, seemingly all of a sudden, the game has changed so dramatically with many of the reliable markers for goodies and baddies being inverted. How many people with a profile like Fry would get this right? Not many, though it’s no excuse in the end. Personally, I find the man mildly amusing on a narrow range of topics and I love his earlier comedic work. But his pontifications on most of today’s talking points are rather tiresome.
Stephen Fry knows what happens to people who speak up before it is perfectly safe to do so. Graham Linehan, for example. Graham paid a heavy price a few years ago, and he's still paying it.
Anyone with an ounce of humanity would have done a bit of research and come out swinging for the kids, if not women, gays and lesbians, autistic and traumatised.
I'm used to people falling off the pedestal I put them on. Just another one biting the dust.

It was pretty obvious that the drag act would win no matter how good or bad he was.
Can't stand the smug bastard
Ditto.
I’m just happy that someone I was disappointed by is now coming round. If he wants to save face, so be it. At least the tide is turning.
Yes. He made a mistake and is coming around. Better to welcome the change of mind. Attacking him for coming to agree with us will get us nowhere in encouraging the next person to do the same.
I agree with you fully, in principle, but I don't think that's what's happened here
Why do you need to trust him? He might be sincere. See what he does. Again, we want to encourage others to be willing to change their minds. Saying what you've said accomplishes nothing in turning others around.
The breasts of the girl will never come back.

Well, it requires bravery to admit you were wrong. Cowards gonna cower.

Another brilliant man who turns out to be an idiot and a disgrace.

THAT is courage.
What a grave disappointment Stephen has become.
I have dubbed Stonewall to be:
Bonewall, where the supremacy of the #Ladydicque may not be questioned.
Spot on Julie .....again! Thank you x
