The Kitty & Tina kiss on (Take The) High Road was in 1998, I know because I cast the characters, storlylined it and was series producer at the time. 😘 So glad it made your list!
Thanks for the memories, especially the reference to Desert Hearts, a favourite of my first lesbian love, who projected the role of Vivian onto me, calling me the Professor from then on (I was doing my PhD at the time). We lasted for 7 years until my obsession with completing in a deadline got the better of us .
The first lesbian kiss on British television is often credited to an episode of the BBC drama “Girl” in 1974. The programme, written by James Robson, was part of the series Second City Firsts and featured a kiss between Alison Steadman and Myra Frances.
That's true. I remember watching this TV play and a very young Alison Steadman. She talks about it in her autobiography and how proud she was about playing the role.
This is a lovely read, although it reminds me of the way we would eagerly grasp at any positive representation of lesbian lives, so starved of it for so long. I remember all of these, except for Hollyoaks, which I never watched. Thanks Julie. An entertaining and important reminder.
PS The Jill Johnson kiss was from Town Bloody Hall, a film that was instrumental and influential in both my feminism and lesbianism back in 1971. Norman Mailer was vile. I particularly remember him being taken apart by a youthful and magnificent Germaine Greer. I still have the video somewhere.
10. Margaret and Beth on Brookside "...delight at lesbian love and passion featuring in a soap opera, between happy, functional teenagers as opposed to bitter and butch types."
I personally find that derogatory reference toward butch women to be offensive and just as anti-lesbian (and anti-feminist) as using "trans" to validate defining a man as a lesbian! PLEASE stop shaming young lesbian women (of ANY age) into being denied their L-card status unless they present adequately as femmes!!! It's NOT the only preferred flavor!

And - I believe the Daily Record's classy exclusive was subtly headlined: 'Dyke The High Road'. 😚
