You may have seen Queer Eye's Jonathan Van Ness says he faces misogyny as a 'nonbinary trans person' for being feminine: 'It doesn't only affect women', he say. What do you think? My short podcast on this coming soon!
Misogyny is specific. It’s prejudice against women and he is not a woman. I think he faces anti-gay prejudice and for being gender nonconforming. The patriarchy works both for and against him depending.
Women face misogyny for being female and the gender role of woman, and its stereotypical notion of femininity, is a social construct to keep us subservient and beneath men.
Misogyny affects women. And women are punished for being too masculine and hence garbage, and too feminine and hence garbage that one might fuck before tossing it out. Think about it -- if women are punished for being too masculine, the same thing that men are praised for, what does that say about misogyny?
Sorry, pal. Your problems are not ours, and feminists have NO RESPONSIBILITY to fix them -- which is what this really is all about, isn't it? Getting those broads to put you first.
What could be more misogynistic than a man putting on a dress and claiming he then knows what it’s like to be a woman? Everything about this man screams contempt for women. And the beard is just an in your face exclamation point.
No. Sexism (in that the gender roles assigned to males and females hurt everyone), sure. Effeminate and other gender-stereotype non-conforming men are often made to suffer for not meeting gender role expectations.
But misogyny? No. The “gyn” is for hatred of females, not hatred of femininity. Ask any butch woman if they’ve effectively exempted themselves from misogyny by not being feminine.
Hatred of the feminine seems to be what this man feels that he experiences as a trans person. Does hatred of the feminine stem from, or find his roots in, misogyny?
How could anybody confuse her for a man with that dress? And that serious sideways woman face? Her pronouns are simply overwhelming!!! Poor thing. It must be terrible being confused for a man!
I know it probably isn’t the popular take in this thread, but I think our culture’s general dislike of anything feminine bleeds out of the box of “just affecting women.” While women might be despised or not taken seriously for being feminine, the silent part of that message is how that affects men who—in order to avoid being treated like women—are relegated to an even smaller crate they were living in before. That sounds like an awful world to live in.
I’m not going to pretend to be an expert in non-binary people (because I still don’t *really* understand it?), but I think for someone like JVN, who doesn’t fit the gender norms for his sex it does open a window for him to observe what women go through. Although it should be mentioned, he does not bear the same cross as a woman faced with misogyny.
Certainly, non-gender-conforming men are treated badly ... mostly by other *men*. I think women are generally more tolerant/accepting. After all there's a reason both trans women and trans men feel safer in women's spaces! I'd like to see a world where you don't feel you have to claim you're the opposite sex just because you don't conform to gender stereotypes.
I'm a woman but according to societal norms I have never been regarded or even regarded myself, for that matter, as particularly feminine. Unlike Jonathan I don't wear makeup and rarely wear a dress. I do know however what it feels like to be on the receiving end of misogyny. Gender stereotypes prepetuate myths around what is typically male or female and those who do not fit neatly into the stereotypes face prejudice. However, I believe the difference with misogyny is that it's targeted directly at women as a result of their biology and not how they present themselves.

Hatred of women can only affect women by definition. How is a beard feminine? What examples did he give of alleged misogyny?
Jonathan faces homophobia. Women face misogyny. Back off, Jon.

Ugh. Sorry, unclear of me. I mean NO to Van Ness saying “it doesn’t only affect women”.
YES! Misogyny ONLY affects women.

So many of these things are cultural, and we just need to let them go if they resonate with someone else.
And I would add, we need to value the feminine more.

I think that’s a fair argument.
