Deaths from fentanyl are at an all time high, and still, the libertarian approach, that has proved to be a disaster, continues. Drug addicted women caught up in the sex trade suffer the most
On the one hand, Canada's Left defends the sale of women's bodies as freedom. On the other hand, Canada's Left also supports Iran developing nuclear weapons so that it can spread a religious ideology that stones women for being accused of having an affair and forces them to drape themselves in black curtains when they appear in public, as well as lowering the age of marriage for girls to 9yrs. Canada's Left embraces 'queer' ideology while supporting societies and cultures that are openly murderous of LGBs (Iran loves trans ideology, BTW, because it's a way of avoiding having to murder gay kids).
What threads these paradoxical perspectives together is a simple idea: all women (including lesbians) belong to men who should have exclusive access to, and control over, them whenever they want. The promise of 72 virgins waiting for you in heaven if you kill a Jew tells you all you need to know about Islamist views of women.
Thanks Julie. You say the debate rages in Canada and yet here I am relying on your reporting. BTW, What is the actual dateline of this piece? Mention of Trudeau is confusing.
Yes, it was while Trudeau was PM that these policies were put into effect. But since he is no longer PM, his status as PM in this article should be put in the past tense to make that clear and avoid confusion.
Thank you for reporting on this! Most Canadians don’t understand how bad it’s become. I had high hopes for an approach to the drugs and sex trade that centred harm reduction. I don’t blame policy makers for trying this. It’s unconscionable, however, that they can’t admit its astonishing failure.
I went to East Hastings back in 2019, and it was by far the worst thing I've ever seen. It is despicable what the Liberal party has done to my country.
This is the first time I’ve seen this addressed, and it’s a question I’ve had since the “safe injection site” thing started in the US: say I wanted to try heroin (or whatever) for the first time but was either scared to buy it off of a dealer (or, more likely, didn’t know how to get it). Could I go to one of these sites and find some Whatever, get it tested for purity, and have the government / NGO help me safely use it?
If so, is this a thing people do? I’m old now, but in my younger and crueler days I would have been curious and adventurous enough to maybe do this if it’s a real thing.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention 'safer supply': For the last several years the BC government has been giving free hydromorphone to addicts on the theory it will divert them from fentanyl, instead they sell the hydromorphone to pay for fentanyl and so you the street price of potent opioid pills is through the floor. Adam Zivo at Canada's National Post has been on this beat for years with excellent reporting:
Thank you for writing about this Julie. I desperately hope a lot of locals see this. It feels like most people in Vancouver are willfully deaf and blind to the facts of this matter. Nobody seems to give a shit about it in any realistic logical reality based way. The NDP has just made it worse. It’s made me hate my home town. 💔 thanks for everything you’ve done❤️

An excellent comment. I will leave it at that because everything we say online is being closely monitored here in the UK.

It was Trudeau’s liberal government policies, still in place and supported by Carney, that created what Julie describes. There is no confusion.

done
Agreed, JP — was this written while PMJT was in office, or did the spectre of PP’s career edit it to try once again to blame his eternal nemesis?

This is nothing new to West Van., read about Gabor Mate.

I wonder what’s next in the non-judgemental category.
