I cannot see prostitution as a job that any free woman would opt for. It is exploitation pure and simple. Horrible, nasty and very dangerous in every way for the human being forced into it either by their circumstances or literally. Thank you for the work that you do to end this revolting myth that it is proper work. We should have left this behind centuries ago.
My question- if Bragg has a daughter, would he suggest that she became a stripper? A friend of mine was forced to “dance” by her husband. She told me that it was unbearable and needed to be shit faced drunk in order to “perform”.
I was imagining a scenario where every public figure promoting “sex work as work” was obliged to wear a Virtual Reality headset for a day. What they would watch / experience would be a day in the life of a prostitute - perhaps a street walker or a woman in a brothel. After 24 hours, would their opinion change? I’d like to think so, albeit if the VR wearer we’re a pimp I imagine … not so much.
I was disappointed recently after watching “Good Luck to you Leo Grande” with Emma Thompson - she’d done so much for older women... but there’s a scene where she and the male prostitute talk about how wonderful the world would be if prostitution was legalised... spoiled an otherwise entertaining film.
The root of the problem is men and their sex drive. We are either sex pests or wankers. The latter appears safer, but Julie’s take on the porn industry is that it feeds the male sex drive and exploits those that work within it. (She may well be right about this) Short of castration (actual or chemical) I’m not sure there is any solution other than policing, controlling and supporting - on a fully international basis - those that work in the sex trade. A tall order perhaps, but not a bad global objective, surely?

I hope Billy read this but I suspect he lacks the attention span. He’s not the man I thought he was (ironic, given his stand on the trans issue).
Julie, I LOVE your strong language in defence of women!

Sex for sale (in whatever form) will never benefit women. It will never empower women.

You could just go and have a wank. Nobody "deserves" sex just because they can.
