Surely the worst thing about porn is not its impact on those that work in the industry out of greed, choice or both. Nor is it the racism, most of which is fantasy-driven anyway. It is the the way porn corrupts. It poisons children, with a hugely damaging effect on their relationships with other kids. Use of porn destroys hitherto successful adult sexual relationships. The idea it can assist or improve those relationships is one of the biggest lies the sex industry promulgates. Perhaps worst of all, internet porn gives the sick-minded the belief that they have kindred spirits all over the world, thus legitimising their depravity, no matter how peculiar. And yet, when it comes to art and culture, we tend to applaud exploration, subversion and risk. That’s why the grey area where art and pornography overlaps is so dangerous. It is a Trojan Horse many of us welcome into our lives and homes. Going forwards, I’m not sure how we manage it either.

Most women involved in porn are victims of abuse or desperate it’s rarely a career choice handed out at school!

Really not sure about this, unless your definitions of what constitutes ‘abuse’ and ‘desperate’ are considerably wider than ‘most’ of us understand. Of course, it’s a shame, but entirely plausible, that a young woman who has spent her entire life being told she is beautiful (and no doubt sexually objectified from a young age by her male peers) might feel obliged to exploit her natural assets. If unmentored, she is more likely to use them in preference to study and graft. I fully agree that any upbringing along these lines amounts to a sustained experience of abuse. If combined with a poor education, this can only have a huge impact on her to make informed choices. But they are still her choices. As ever, parents have a lot to answer for. And social media doesn’t help either.

Totally agree with you Julie. Anything can be justify that does not make it right. I spend years in an abusive sexual relationship with a man in which I had to please him to keep him sweet he watched porn and was obsessed with it. I am all for a blanket ban . X

Thank you, this was truly illuminating.

At the end, did you mean "US policy" rather than "UK"?
